Diamond Ring Cuts
All diamonds must be cut before they can be used in engagement rings and other diamond rings. The cut of a diamond has nothing to do with its shape, it is the way in which light is reflected from one facet to another and dispersed through the top of the stone. A master diamond cutter can cut the stone in such a way as to maximise the amount of light to be reflected through the diamond, giving it the characteristic diamond fire and scintillation.
What are Diamond Cuts?
A diamond is cut to achieve symmetry, which is a term that refers to the alignment of a diamond's facets, its flat and polished surfaces. The facets should be cut to achieve the best play of light.
In a properly cut diamond, light travels among the facets, allowing as much light as possible to enter the diamond and be reflected out. The technical term for this is scintillation, the flash of fire that is seen as light catches engagement rings or other diamond rings
If the facets are inexpertly cut, the scintillation is less dramatic. All engagement rings should be able to satisfy their owners’ desires to see the characteristic firework display of the well cut diamond.
The Asscher Cut Diamond Ring
The Asscher Cut has recently revived in favour after a drop in popularity. The cut was originally developed by Joseph Asscher, who was commissioned by the Royal Family to cut the 3,106ct Cullinan diamond, the largest diamond the world has ever known.
At the beginning of the 21st century the Asscher cut became the subject of in depth research and development after which it was relaunched with extra facets giving it a more brilliant shine. As a square cut diamond it is enjoying considerable popularity in engagement rings and other diamond rings because ofd its modern look.
In 2001, the cut went through considerable reasearch and development and was re-launced with new specifcations and addtional facets for a more brilliant shine. Now Asscher cuts have been revatilized especially with the increasing popularity of square shapes, princess and asscher cuts are in demand more
The Princess Cut Diamond Ring
The princess cut is the most important new cut for diamonds since the perfection of the modern brilliant cut over 60 years ago. It is a great improvement over the previous step cut used for square and oblong diamonds. It is effectively a square version of the round brilliant cut, and is known technically as a square modified brilliant cut. It is particularly striking when used in engagement rings because of its extra faceting which gives it superior fire and sparkle making it a real attention grabber. The cut minimises any inclusions and yellow/brown colour so that a better result is achieved for a very reasonable price
The Emerald Cut Diamond Ring
The emerald cut is rectangular shaped, but with the corners cut off, giving a very bold and solid appearance. It is based on a series of flat, rectangular facets stepping down off the table to give it a unique brilliance but it is an older-fashioned cut than the two described above and the cut does not hide inclusions and colour imperfections so well. Consequently emerald cut diamonds are often relatively expensive and not so much in demand for engagement rings.
The Round Cut Diamond Ring
Modern round brilliant cut diamonds are admitted to produce the best sparkle in the engagement rings they often adorn. The most popular modern cut, for almost 100 years, diamond cutters have been using advanced theories of light behavior and precise mathematical calculations to optimize the fire and brilliance in a round diamond. A round cut diamond will typically give more flexibility in terms of balancing cut, color, and clarity grades while still enhancing engagement rings with its fire and brilliance.
For engagement rings, to maximize the brilliance of a traditional round diamond, select one in the two highest cut grades, ideal or very good, and choose ideal, excellent, or very good polish and symmetry grades.
